Dawn Richard is one of the few Danity Kane members that continues to thrive through live show performances and modeling. However, she is still reeling from her days in the group and the mishandling of them while signed to Bad Boy.
During her recent chat with Fashion Radio, she revealed that Diddy was more interested in Danity Kane as television personalities and not actual singers. Richard told the hosts that the popularity of “Making the Band” was the main focus of her former boss. The support from the label was so lackluster that Diddy only ordered 100,000 physical copies of Danity Kane’s self-titled debut album because he wasn’t confident they’d sell more than his then-artist, Cassie. However, Danity Kane sold 100,000 on the first day of their release in 2006, leaving Bad Boy scrambling to get more copies.
“We wound up selling 230,000 copies, and we could have sold more,” Richard revealed.
Even more disappointing is that even with successful record sales, Bad Boy still refused to help the women. Richard and her group mates, Audrey O’Day, D. Woods, Aundrea Fimbres, and Shannon Bex, were forced to create their own stage costumes.
“When we toured, they wouldn’t give us any money, so we were sewing our costumes from Forever 21.”
Richard isn’t the first member of the girl group to slam Diddy and his Bad Boy Records (known as Bad Boy Atlantic during that time). O’Day has described Diddy as a “very difficult person to work with.” Woods called her time on the music competition series “miserable” due to Diddy constantly making comments about her weight.
The music mogul hasn’t responded to this latest criticism of his management skills.
