Latto opens up about supporting upcoming female artists and past Nicki Minaj beef.
The 24-year-old rapper recently sat down with Billboard and spoke candidly about her career, the new wave of female rappers, and her brief disagreement with Nicki Minaj. During the conversation, Latto revealed that she does not charge rising female rappers for a feature as a way to “uplift others.”
“My No. 1 thing has been being a girl’s girl,” she explains. “I utilize my power in uplifting others on my way up. When you see Latto do a feature with an upcoming female rapper, I don’t charge them. The label got to cover the glam, but I don’t profit off that.”
She also discussed the public issue between her and Nicki Minaj that sent social media in a frenzy. If you’re not aware, Minaj was infuriated after her single “Super Freaky Girl” became apart of the pop category for the 2023 Grammys. She expressed her grievances on Twitter and called for Latto’s record “Big Energy” to be moved into the category as well.
“If [‘Super Freaky Girl’] has 2B moved out RAP then so does Big Energy!” Minaj tweeted.
“It’s difficult navigating through situations like that because there’s a disconnect. I will look at myself as a fan of someone and they will view [me] in a whole different light,” Latto said. “It’s disappointing. You just got to take it to the chin and keep pushing.”
Nevertheless, Latto says she is focused on a new “authentic” chapter in her career while staying true to her roots.
“The content I’m about to roll out is a whole fresh new leaf,” she added. “I genuinely love to see the new wave of female rap, and I’m honored to be a part of it.”
