Top NFL Draft Pick Jalen Carter Charged in Fatal Street Racing Crash That Left UGA Staffer and Teammate Dead

The career of top NFL prospect Jalen Carter hangs in the balance, as he turned himself into police after an official arrest warrant was issued for his role in a fatal car accident.

On Wednesday, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department announced that Carter was charged with reckless driving and racing, both misdemeanors in Georgia. On January 15th, the 21-year-old former University of Georgia student was racing his 2021 Jeep Trackhawk against now-deceased Georgia recruiting employee Chandler LeCroy, who was driving a 2021 Ford Expedition. LeCroy reached up to 104 mph before losing control of the vehicle. Her blood alcohol level was also .197, over twice the state’s legal limit.

According to a police report, Carter initially told responding officers he was driving behind LeCroy and heard the crash from a nearby apartment building. An investigation confirmed the two were speeding as they weaved in and out of traffic. Another University of Georgia football player, offensive lineman Devin Willock, was in LeCroy’s SUV. He was also killed in the wreck. Other passengers, UGA right tackle Warren McClendon and another recruiting staffer, Victoria “Tory” Bowles, were injured in the accident but survived.

Shortly after news broke of the arrest warrant, Carter left the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis to travel to Athens. In a statement shared on his Twitter, Carter said “inaccurate” information was being spread about the crash and is confident he will be cleared in the case.

Carter turned himself in on Wednesday night and was released shortly after posting a $4,000 bail. A source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the football star returned to the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis Thursday.

An arraignment hearing in his case was set for April 18.
