California officials are planning to name a skatepark after Sacramento native Tyre Nichols less than two months after his passing.

Ten days into the New Year, Nichols, 29,  passed away three days after being assaulted by five Memphis police officers following a traffic stop.

Nichols was passionate about skateboarding, according to his mother RowVaughn Wells, and stepfather Rodney Wells

The City of Sacramento’s Parks and Community Enrichment Committee stated that this is to honor the skateboarder since the state park in Regency Park currently does not have a name.

“I would love to see if we can maybe refresh that area and add some features, you know, in honor of Tyre and many of the kids that I see out there,” said Sacramento City Councilwoman Lisa Kaplan.

In addition to the naming, a bronze plaque will be placed on a concrete pad at the skatepark.

“Tyre Nichols has a strong connection to the skate park at Regency Park and spent numerous hours of his youth skating and building friendships there,” the Commission’s discussion item states.  “The tragedy of his death has elevated his name to the national significance and, as such, underscores his connection and contribution to Sacramento, the community of North Natomas, and Regency Park.”

Although the nomination was made earlier than the one-year deadline, the discussion item explains that the facility’s naming policy allows an exception in situations with “special circumstance, need, or opportunity,” permitting the early submission.

“In this case, the public outpour and support for Tyre Nichols and his family have coalesced support for immediately naming this skate park in his honor, before the usual one-year time frame stated in the policy,” the discussion item stated.

The city also plans to hold a dedication ceremony with Nichols’ mother and other family members around his birthday in June.
