Due to a change in production site, Toblerone chocolate bars will no longer claim their “Swiss-made” status.
In the third quarter of 2023, parent company Mondelez International will relocate some of its manufacturing to Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
CNN reported that the triangle-shaped chocolate bar would no longer sport the Matterhorn peak logo that has adorned its package since 1970.
A spokesperson for the company said, “We need to adjust our packaging to comply with Swissness legislation. We have removed our Swissness claim from the front of the Toblerone pack and changed our description ‘of Switzerland’ to ‘established in.”
According to Switzerland’s 2017 Swissness Act, all national symbols and the Swiss cross must meet “Swissness” criteria for product use.
Over 7 billion bars are produced by the company each year, with 120 countries receiving 97% of its products. One Toblerone alone is allegedly sold every two seconds in airport duty-free shops.
The new Mondelez packaging will include a different mountain and “a distinctive new Toblerone typeface and logo” with the founder, Theodor Tobler’s signature.
