DoorDash is now allowing customers to pay for pizza orders using cash only.
The Cash on Delivery option was announced Tuesday. However, it is only available for restaurants using its DoorDash Drive white-label fulfillment tools. Customers can pay DoorDash directly with cash for digital orders, but a few things have yet to be addressed. For one, this means that delivery drivers will be forced to carry more money than usual. This could place them at risk of robbery during deliveries. They will also be responsible for operational-type issues that restaurants face, such as having enough change on hand and possibly encountering counterfeit currency.
Nevertheless, the feature is here and is meant to be a convenient way for customers to pay for food. Ben Smith, director of operations development at Donatos Pizza, praised the Cash on Delivery function as a way of offering “high-quality service” to all who order pizza from them.
Instead of couriers having to drive the money back to the eatery, they keep it, including tips. The order amount is then deducted from their weekly wages. A new communication system has also been implemented to allow DoorDash drivers to communicate better with buyers via text.
Cash on Delivery was enforced after merchants expressed customers’ desire to pay with cash instead of credit or debit cards, as is standard with most delivery apps today. Drivers are also on board, with 75% of U.S. couriers down to accept cash orders. Pizza warming bags are also provided to drivers to ensure freshness upon arrival.
