Hunting Lodge Where Alex Murdaugh Killed His Family Sells For $3.9 Million

Alex Murdaugh Appears With Shaved Head Following Being Sentenced To Life In Prison

In a morbid real estate transaction sure to be talked about for decades to come, the location where Alex Murdaugh killed his wife and son has sold for millions.

The hunting lodge in Colleton County, South Carolina, is now in the hands of new owners James A. Ayer and Jeffrey L. Godley, who bought it for $3.9 million. The 1,772-acre property was thrust into the spotlight in 2021 when the bodies of Maggie and their son Paul were found on the land with fatal bullet wounds. On March 2nd, 2023, Alex was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison for their slayings. The disgraced attorney and his family are also persons of interest in several other murders.

The home offers 2.5 miles of river and multiple launching points for boats and kayaks. There are also three miles of accessible roads and 12 dog kennels. Upon purchase, the new owners cleared the home, with much of the Murdaugh items going up for auction. Some disturbing items that could be bid on were a hunting shirt with “Alex” sprawled inside the collar, lamps made of turtle shells, and countless other pieces of furniture once belonging to the family. One couch from the family’s decrepit estate sold for $30,000, per the Daily Mail.

Proceeds from the sale of the property will be divided between the Murdaugh’s surviving son Buster, who will get $530,000, and the surviving relatives of 19-year-old Mallory Beach, who died in a February 23rd, 2019, boat crash that was a result of Paul crashing his vessel while drunk with five other people on board. A $2.7 million settlement was approved in January for Beach’s family. A separate rider who was injured on the boat will receive $100,000. The remaining funds will go to creditors that Alex owed, as well as his legal fees.

Alex is currently appealing his sentence.
