“Theybie” dad refuses to give his kids a gender, allowing them to choose their own as they get older.
A Connecticut father by the name of Christian is joining the Gender-Neutral Baby Movement. According to the father of three, his motivation for allowing his kids to discover their own identities is his lifelong struggles with his own. Christian says he knew at age six that he was born into the wrong body after being biologically born a female. Initially thinking he was a tomboy, he knew things were more profound. Christian says he was unaware of what transgender meant at the time but knew he was not in the correct body. However, due to depression and gender dysphoria, he knew he could no longer keep living as a female, he explained to News.com.au.
Now with his children, Liam, 7, Laura, 5, and Teddy, 2, Christian is medically transitioned from female to male and is encouraging his kids to be true to themselves without conforming to gender. Once they are old enough, Christian says they can choose, but for now, he prefers they use they/them pronouns instead of traditional ones. He even refers to the youngest as “theybie.” They each wear gender-neutral clothes and play with boys’ and girls’ toys.
“Gender is much more about how you feel inside yourself. I use they/them pronouns and a gender-neutral nickname for my baby,” he explained before adding, “I dress my baby very gender-neutral, but if they showed interest in dressing in a different way, I would, of course, support them.”
