Styles P discussed The Notorious B.I.G.’s intention to help The LOX repair their relationship with Diddy during a recent The Art of Dialogue appearance. However, before Big could broker peace, he was killed in a drive-by shooting.
Styles discusses the night Big was gunned down in Los Angeles, the first time The LOX had ever visited California.
“We literally had just left — we was going somewhere else, and then, just heard it was shots, and Big got shot,” he said. “That was just really f*ckin’ crazy, like, you know what I’m sayin’? And we were just finished talkin’ to him about — we was having some kind of rift with Puff, and he was basically kind of just, like, trying to guide us through it, telling us, chill out, you know? He’s gonna hold it down when he get back.”
Styles says that the trio thought very highly of Big, and they were devastated by his death.
“That shit was devastating. That was our big bro. He was really cool,” Styles explained. “That’s why we made ‘We’ll Always Love Big Poppa.’ We held him in a very high regard, so we wanted to show that love for him.”
After Big was killed, the beef between The LOX and Puff only got worse. The LOX launched the “Free The LOX” campaign in the late 90s in an effort to be released from their contract with Bad Boy Records. They felt they were not a good fit for the label’s “shiny suit” era sound.
Styles previously discussed an incident where he threw a chair at Diddy during an interview with HipHopDX in 2020.
“The moment with tossing the chair at Puff was a combination of being really f*cking stupid and really f*cking angry,” he explained. “I think for me; Big was always the barrier, and the mediator, and the middle person.”
He explained that Big was the person that was always able to make things make sense, and when he passed, it was hard for Styles to understand some things. But, he says that in the end, the group has no regrets about anything that happened.
