College athletes from Iowa and Iowa State teams are alleged to have been involved in gambling.
According to reports, 26 Iowa students and 15 Iowa State students are involved in claims of internet sports betting, and the two campuses have become the epicenter of college athletics’ next potential betting issue.
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission led the investigation into the allegations of the Iowa athletes. The Cyclones, on the other hand, announced in a statement that they had contacted the NCAA about the possible violations.
“The Board of Regents is aware of concerns related to online gambling involving individuals associated with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University,” the Iowa Board of Regents said in a statement. “The Board of Regents and the universities will fully cooperate with any investigations related to these concerns.”
“We are closely monitoring the situation and have confidence that University administrators at each institution will take all necessary steps to ensure ongoing compliance.”
According to the Des Moines Register, the athletes from Iowa participate in football, men’s basketball, baseball, men’s track and field, and wrestling, including one staffer from the athletic department.
At Iowa State, athletes participated in football, wrestling, and track and field.
On May 2, the University was made aware of the college athletes’ alleged sports betting.
“Iowa State University and its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is aware of online sports wagering allegations involving approximately 15 of our active student-athletes from the sports of football, wrestling and track & field in violation of NCAA rules,” said the University. “The university has notified the NCAA and will take the appropriate actions to resolve these issues.”
