A poem recited by Amanda Gorman, a famous poet, during President Joe Biden‘s inauguration has caused quite a stir in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Shockingly, the poem titled “The Hills We Climb” has been removed from the curriculum of elementary schools after just one parent raised objections.
According to The Miami Herald, a local parent named Daily Salinas voiced concerns about the poem’s appropriateness for students, leading to its ban. Salinas didn’t stop there, though. She also challenged four other books: “The ABCs of Black History,” “Cuban Kids,” “Countries in the News Cuba,” and “Love to Langston.” Salinas claimed that these books contained “hidden messages of hate” influenced by something called critical race theory.
Salinas clarified to The Miami Herald that she does not favor censoring materials but believes that students should have access to accurate information about Cuba. She expressed her dissatisfaction with the fact that the books she objected to were still available for middle school students, arguing that they were inappropriate for all age groups.
