Mississippi Boy Shot By Police Officer Is Now Recovering At Home

Aderrien Murry

A Mississippi boy who was brutally shot in the chest by a police officer responding to a domestic violence call is now recovering at home.

The child, Aderrien Murry, called 911 on Saturday at the request of his mother, Nakala Murry. One of her children’s fathers had come to the home in Indianola and began acting “irate.” Fearing for the family’s safety, Nakala had her son call for help. Once Officer Greg Capers arrived at the home, he had his gun drawn at the door and commanded everyone inside to come out. As Aderrien came running from around a corner to exit the house as he was instructed, Capers shot him in the chest. Afterward, he helped Nakala administer aid until first responders made it to the home.

“I cannot grasp why. The same cop that told him to come out of the house. Aderrien did, and he got shot. He kept asking, ‘Why did he shoot me? What did I do wrong?'” Nakala said.

The 11-year-old suffered a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, and a lacerated liver. He was released on Wednesday but still has a long road ahead with his recovery. Meanwhile, protesters and activists are shocked that Capers is on paid administrative leave during an internal investigation when there is bodycam footage showing what happened.

A rally at Indianola City Hall on Thursday demanded justice. Family attorney Carlos Moore has pointed out that Capers has been called the department’s “best officer,” which is a shocking revelation.

“If he’s your best, Indianola, you need a clean house from top to bottom,” he stated

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has also joined the investigation. Capers nor the Indianola have commented publicly on the case.
