Georgia authorities confirmed the death of a 17-year-old girl who was killed after a high-speed chase involving the Georgia State Patrol ended with a multi-car crash in downtown Atlanta.
Six others were injured and taken to the hospital, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
GSP troopers tried to stop a black Toyota Camry going 99 mph in a 55 mph zone on I-75 around 9 p.m. But the driver didn’t stop and initiated a chase.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle exited onto Omron Street and continued to speed. The driver ran the red light on Hank Aaron Drive, causing the car to go airborne and flip over, resulting in a multi-vehicle accident, WSB-TV News reported.
The car’s roof was ripped off and four of the six people inside were ejected. According to GSP, none of them were wearing seatbelts.
The driver then ran from the troopers.
All six people in the car were transported to the hospital. However, D’yonni Davis, 17, died from her injuries, according to a GoFundMe set up by her family.
It’s unclear if the driver, 27-year-old Ronald Antwon Battle, has been arrested.
Davis’ father, Darrion Lucius, said his daughter was the oldest sibling of seven. Her family would like to raise enough money to ship her body back to St. Louis, where she is from, for a proper burial.
