This weekend I did something I have not done in a long while and before I tell you what that thing was I want to express that this is a judgement free zone. K? Cool. Somewhere in between Orange is the New Black and obsessing over Poussey I… Well, I…. watched a Tyler Perry film. *covers face in shame while peeking through my fingers* While watching “Why Did I Get Married?” there was something that (besides Angela’s flawless bob cut. Whew!) prompted me to make a few phone calls to my closest friends. Remember the table scene when Sheila went all Jilly from Philly on Mike and cracked him over the head with a champagne bottle? Moments before, the dinner table exploded with secrets that the group of friends were keeping from their spouses but openly shared with one another.
What made me raise an eyebrow is when Milk Dud Mike uttered ‘that’s what Sheila told me.’ in reference to a couple’s secret. Clearly Sheila was told that information on the hush and it was not to be repeated, yet she told her husband. I guess it slipped by me the first few times I’ve watched it but it made me giggle this time around. It wasn’t a ‘haha, that’s funny’ giggle but more like a ‘man, that’s so real and I can totally relate’ giggle. Years back I told my homegirl something in (what I thought was) confidence only for her to blab to her mate who then told my mate.. and nothing was the same (No Drake). I decided then that I would only dish dirt that I was comfortable being shared with a significant other. I would never say ‘oh yea girl, it’s okay for you to tell Tyrone!’ but it’s something that I sort of expect now. It’s not that I don’t trust people it’s just that I know human behavior and even the most honorable person can get too chatty with their boo. Especially if they have one of those relationships where their lover doubles as their bff. It happens. A lot.
To make sure I wasn’t making this up I phoned my best friend who is one of the most virtuous people I know, and asked her what she thought of story sharing and if it was a thing in her relationship.. She told me that there has been a time or two when she has told her mate the 411 (what?! people don’t say that anymore?) and so did nearly every one else I ran the topic by. Out of the 5 people I spoke with only one person said that she has never broken confidentiality by spilling the beans to their boy. Hmmmm.
