Former President Donald Trump was placed under arrest and booked on federal charges Tuesday after being indicted last week in connection to his mishandling of classified documents.
Trump is facing 37 felony charges, accusing him of unlawfully holding onto national defense information and concealing documents in violation of witness-tampering laws during the Justice Department’s investigation into these materials. His aide, Walt Nauta, was also charged in the indictment and arrested Tuesday. Both men are accused of engaging in a conspiracy to obstruct the federal investigation.
During an arraignment hearing Tuesday afternoon, the ex-president pleaded not guilty to all 37 counts, CNN reports.
If found guilty, the majority of the charges could result in prison sentences of up to 10 years. However, the obstruction charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
The federal indictment comes just months after a Manhattan grand jury charged Trump in a separate hush-money case.
He’s denied any wrongdoings in both cases.
