Medical Examiner Says Texas Airport Worker Who Got Sucked Into Plane Engine Died by Suicide

The Texas Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled the death of a ground crew worker a suicide.

On Friday, the worker was sucked into an engine of a Delta Air Lines plane around 10:25 p.m. while working at the San Antonio International Airport.

The plane had arrived from Los Angeles and was taxiing to the gate, the National Transportation Safety Board confirmed.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office told the outlet the employee was identified Monday as 27-year-old David Renner and noted his cause of death was due to blunt and sharp force injuries. The medical examiner’s office said the doctor “saw signs that pointed to suicide.”

The safety board said Tuesday that it no longer plans to investigate the man’s death in light of the ruling from the medical examiner.

“The NTSB will not be opening an investigation into this event,” according to the statement, which the agency provided to USA TODAY. “There were no operational safety issues with either the airplane or the airport.”
