Scott Kirby, the CEO of United Airlines, apologized for utilizing private flights during the same week when the airline had to cancel numerous flights.
On Wednesday, the day when United Airlines had to cancel 750 flights, Kirby opted to travel via a private jet from Teterboro, New Jersey to Denver. To add to the delays, United also canceled a total roughly 3,000 flights this week allow with most of them at Newark Liberty International Airport.
“Taking a private jet was the wrong decision because it was insensitive to our customers who were waiting to get home,” Kirby said in a statement… “I sincerely apologize to our customers and our team members who have been working around the clock for several days — often through severe weather — to take care of our customers.”
Kirby added, “I promise to better demonstrate my respect for the dedication of our team members and the loyalty of our customers.”
The cancellations came due to the severe weather the east coast has experienced. Additionally, Newark, LaGuardia, and JFK airports issued warnings on Twitter regarding flight disruptions, delays, and cancellations due to adverse weather conditions. They advised travelers to allocate additional time and urged them to stay in touch with their respective airlines for the latest updates.
While weather conditions were a contributing factor, it is important to note that the ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers in the United States was another significant reason for the flight disruptions. Kirby, in a letter addressed to employees on Monday, emphasized this issue and warned that the shortage could lead to additional challenges in the weeks ahead.
“I’m … frustrated that the FAA frankly failed us this weekend,” Kirby said, adding that he estimated more than 150,000 United customers had experienced disruptions “because of FAA staffing issues and their ability to manage traffic.”
