After 30 years together, former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, are calling it quits…sort of.
The couple joined The New York Times in a recent three-hour-long sit down, where they confirmed that their relationship had reached its breaking point. While the pair appeared to still be very much in love with one another, McCray admitted that things had become a bit boring between them.
“I just want to have fun,” McCray said, adding that “It’s not that we haven’t had fun.”
The couple married in May 1994 while they were both working for Mayor David Dinkins administration. The activist and politician share two children, Chiara de Blasio, and Dante de Blasio. Despite three decades together and a seemingly strong family unit, the two shared that the romantic spark was not currently there. McCray explained that “you can’t fake it,” and de Blasio agreed, recognizing that things had felt “off” with them for some time.
McCray and de Blasio may be bored with one another, but that doesn’t mean that they are ready to sign divorce papers any time soon. Instead, they have decided, at least for now, to date other people while remaining under the same roof in their Brooklyn townhome, where they have lived for years. For years, McCray identified as a lesbian before marrying de Blasio, which he admits was concerning at the beginning of their relationship. Now, the 68-year-old author will have the opportunity to explore this avenue once more while her 62-year-old husband is free to do the same.
