Dwyane Wade is showing support for the sports community by becoming apart of the ownership group for the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.

On Friday, the accomplished three-time NBA champion formally announced the news on Instagram, saying he’s deeply passionate about the sport’s growth.

“It’s an incredible feeling being on this side of history. To see growth, on the business side, for something that I’ve been passionate about my whole life is an amazing feeling,” Wade wrote. “There are amazing things happening in the @WNBA. It’s official! This is for the home team.”

Last month, the franchise successfully sold a 10% stake of the Chicago Sky to a consortium of eight investors for $85 million. While the specific ownership percentage held by Wade has not been disclosed, it’s worth noting that this is not his initial venture into sports ownership. As a three-time NBA champion, Wade is also involved in ownership groups for the Utah Jazz and MLS’ Real Salt Lake.

“We all talk about support, and support looks different for everyone,” Wade told ESPN. “And so instead of tweeting out and saying ‘go support the W,’ instead of showing up at the game and supporting. I wanted to take it to that next level, and this was the next level for me.”

He added, “It’s a great opportunity to be a part of the league in its very early stages. Growth is going to happen, and so I want to be a part of the growth of this league.”

The Chicago Sky have achieved an impressive record of eight playoff appearances out of the last ten seasons. Their notable accomplishments include clinching the WNBA championship title in 2021. However, the team has commenced with a somewhat challenging start this season, currently holding an 8-12 record.
