Amazon Introduces Cashless "Pay by Palm" Transactions at Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh Locations Nationwide

Amazon is introducing “Amazon One,” a palm recognition service for contactless payments, identification, and entry at over 500 Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh locations nationwide.

Instead of using a credit card or Apple Pay, Amazon One will allow subscribers to pay with a simple palm hover, while Prime members can link their membership for added savings and benefits.
Currently, the palm recognition service is operational at 200 locations in over 20 U.S. states, which include Arizona, California, Idaho, Oregon, and Mississippi.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said, “By the end of the year, you won’t need your wallet to pay when checking out at any of the 500+ U.S. @WholeFoods.”

So far, Amazon One’s convenience extends beyond Whole Foods, as numerous other businesses are adopting it for payments, identification, and secure entry.

Amazon’s palm payment is highly secure, using unique “palm signatures” generated from analyzing the palm and vein structure.  These signatures are safely stored in the AWS cloud.

According to the company, the palm is the safest biometric for identification as it does not directly reveal a person’s identity.  Customer palm data will not be shared with third parties, even “in response to government demands.”

Customers can enroll their palm by pre-registering online with their credit/debit card, Amazon account, and phone number.  Afterward, they must scan their palm at any Amazon One device location to complete the registration process.

“We are always looking for new ways to delight our customers and improve the shopping experience,” said Whole Foods Market chief technology officer Leandro Balbinotat. “Since we’ve introduced Amazon One at Whole Foods Market stores over the past two years, we’ve seen that customers love the convenience it provides.”
