Bullies of this generation are likely to be on the Internet, hiding behind a fake profile picture to protect their identity from the consequences of their actions. Others reveal their identity and act as if their insults and offenses are just an unpopular opinion when confronted with backlash. Recently, “Twitter troll” Azealia Banks used her social media platform to attack 14-year-old Disney star, Skai Jackson. But, to Banks’ surprise, Jackson clapped back. And it was good!
Since then, Banks’ twitter has been suspended and all that is left are the classic comebacks from Jackson. To further explain her side of the Twitter argument, self-confidence, and the now very viral meme of herself, the actress sat with Teen Vogue.
Jackson’s initial tweet suggesting the controversial tweeter “simmer down,” is what motivated Banks to redirect her offenses from former One Direction member, Zayn Malik to Jackson. Without a direct mention or @, the Disney star felt the need to express her disapproval in the insults Banks aimed toward Malik.
“I felt like it was totally offensive and not right to say at all. She’s a bully, and I’ve been bullied when I was younger. I’m against bullying; I hate it because I’ve dealt with it. I felt like I had to say something on my Twitter.“ She told Teen Vogue.
While, a response from Banks is not surprising, the level of rudeness was shocking to Jackson. Instead of allowing the disrespect, Jackson decided to respond, in a way that was still above the low blows Banks expressed, as a lesson to her fans.
“I say if someone’s bullying you, stand up to them. Say something.” She continued, “That’s something I felt like I had to do, not for anyone else, just myself.”
Still taking the higher road, Jackson hoped that one day Bank would realize that her talent is covered by her constant negativity and it’s hurting her more than helping. Ultimately, she suggests Banks take a break from social media because she is making a “mockery of herself.”
Switching gears, Jackson revealed that she actually enjoys laughing at the memes of herself that have been circling the Internet. She explained that her mother helped her gain self-confidence. She said, “If you’re not confident in yourself, then what are you living for? Things are not going to be easy all the time, but know it will get better.”
While, Jackson’s mother has been with her through everything. She expressed to Teen Vogue that Oprah and Beyoncé were two women she admires. Oprah, for all that she has does and has done for people and Beyoncé, for her message of confidence and self-love.
At the end of the day, Jackson is just a 14-year-old girl, “who likes to have fun, a girl who’s confident in herself, a girl that believes in herself,” and let’s not forget, the comeback princess.
