Lucy Letby, the child serial killer responsible for the murders of seven UK babies, received life behind bars.
Former neonatal nurse Letby, who was arrested in 2018 and found guilty of the murder of seven infants under her care at a hospital in northern England, along with the attempted murder of six others, has received a life imprisonment verdict on Monday, with no possibility of parole.
In his ruling, Justice James Goss spoke candidly while describing the actions committed by the 33-year-old nurse.
“There was a malevolence bordering on sadism in your action,” Goss said, addressing Letby. “During the course of this trial, you have coldly denied any responsibility for your wrongdoing. You have no remorse. There are no mitigating factors.”
The verdict follows a 22-day deliberation by a jury at Manchester Crown Court, which found Letby guilty of the murders of the seven infants. These tragic events unfolded over the course of a year, during which she exploited the vulnerabilities of fragile newborns and the concerns of their parents. Accused by prosecutors of deriving a twisted thrill from the act of killing babies and assuming a godlike role over those entrusted to her, Letby conducted her deadly series of actions within the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England. This grim spree occurred from June 2015 to June 2016.
Additionally, she was accused of a particularly chilling act: killing an infant solely to attract the attention of another doctor. In another grievous incident, Letby turned her focus to a mother of twins who was already mourning the loss of one of her children. Remaining watchful after the initial tragedy, the family thought the second infant would be safe. However, they lowered their guard, and during this moment of vulnerability, Letby harmed the surviving twin.
