The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat is the most stolen vehicle from 2020 to 2022, 60 times more likely to be targeted than any other car, despite Kia vehicles being easier to steal.
The Highway Loss Data Institute’s report reveals that for 2020-2022 models, Hellcat cars had 25 theft claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years, while the most stolen car among 2017-2019 models, the Infiniti Q60, had just two theft claims per 1,000 insured vehicle years.
“If you own a Hellcat, you better check your driveway,” said HLDI senior vice president Matt Moore. “These numbers are unbelievable.”
The Kia Sportage ranked sixth on HLDI’s list, ahead of the Land Rover Range Rover 4WD and Infiniti Q50 4WD. Other Kia models like the Sportage 4WD, Rio, and Forte also made the list.
In the past two years, Kia and Hyundai vehicle thefts in the U.S. spiked due to a viral TikTok challenge demonstrating how to steal them using a USB cord and a screwdriver.
According to the report, Kia and Hyundai vehicles in the U.S. were easier to steal because they lacked “engine immobilizers” from 2011 to 2022, resulting in a $200 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit against the manufacturers.
