Influencer Dana Chanel Ordered To Pay $87k In Restitution For Misleading Customers

A Christian social media influencer has been ordered to pay over $87,000 to customers she is alleged to have deceived.

According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, they have reached a settlement deal with Casey Olivera, also known as Dana Chanel, and she must pay restitution to her 1.1 million Instagram followers.

“Advertising in today’s world has changed, and people trust personalities they follow online to promote desirable goods,” said Attorney General Michelle Henry. “In these cases, consumers were misled by the influencer and businesses that did not deliver on purchases.”

In November 2021, the self-described Christian tech entrepreneur was sued by then-Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro for allegedly accepting payments from customers without delivering the services promised.

“Dana Chanel built a following online by presenting herself as a Black woman-owned small business success story,” Shapiro told the Inquirer. “She advertised the products of her companies as a way for other Black small business owners to achieve what she did. Then, she ripped off the same community she claimed to care about.”

According to reports, the influencer promoted credit repair services from Credit Exterminators Inc., later known as Earn Company, LLC, and mobile app development services offered by Alakazam Apps, LLC. However, customers of these businesses claimed they didn’t always receive the services they paid for.

For instance, a nonprofit organization leader mentioned in the lawsuit found out about Alakazam Apps through Chanel’s Instagram page. She then paid $2,000 to the company, expecting to partner with developers for a custom app, but she never received an app, as per 6ABC.

Olivera allegedly violated consumer protection laws by misleading customers, leading to a ban on advertising credit repair and mobile app services. She is now required to pay over $120,000, including more than $87,000 to multiple clients.
