Diddy Says He Began Giving Back Publishing Two Years Ago

Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, formerly known as Puff Daddy, now known as Love, recently gifted his artists their publishing rights, and there have been some questions.

While the news of Diddy’s latest move surfaced last week, he confirmed to Variety that he began the process of giving artists their publishing at least two years ago. Things just recently wrapped up, and according to the producer, he felt the decision would help change how the music business operated.

“It’s just doing the right thing. I think that we, as an industry and as a people, have to look in the mirror and make a shift forward. It’s about evolving, leading by example, and reforming an industry that needs it in a world that needs reform,” he told the outlet. 

When the publishing news began to surface, many fans praised Diddy for his gesture, while some slammed him for being performative with his efforts. One of his biggest critics was former Bad Boy rapper Mark Curry, who argued that the publishing is no longer worth anything.

“What’s it worth now? He gave me mine back a long time ago… That’s disrespectful…I said, ‘Why don’t you just keep it and pay me?’ I don’t want the publishing. I want the money,” Curry said in an IG video. In the caption, he also requested that Diddy hand over $1 million that he believes he is owed.

Before the publishing “reassigning” came about, rapper Mase also called out Diddy for refusing to hand over the rights. He claimed in a now-deleted social media rant that Diddy gave him $20,000, despite Mase offering his former CEO $2 million for his publishing, which Diddy refused. According to Diddy, Mase has been granted his wish. 

“Everything’s cool and good now. You know, we’re brothers and brothers fight. I love him, and that’s it,” he stated.
