Fulton County DA Fani Willis Has No Regrets About the YSL Case: “There Were Lives Lost”

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis firmly believes that lyrics should be used in prosecution cases.

The controversial DA, who is leading the YSL RICO case and Donald Trump’s voter interference battle, was recently a panelist at the CultureVersations discussion during Revolt World. Host Phillana Williams asked Willis, “Do you believe song lyrics can be used as evidence in court cases?” Willis did not mince words when explaining exactly why she is all for using music to put away criminals.

“If you commit a crime and then you brag about it in a song, it’s a confession. ‘Cause you put a beat behind it does not make it any less of a confession, and we are going to use it to convict you,” Willis explained.

The topic of using song lyrics as evidence has long been a debate among musicians and legal experts. Last year, California passed a bill to limit the use of lyrics in cases. However, with the hip-hop practice of dissing the deceased, many artists go as far as describing shootings and killings in great detail. Lawyers have pointed to incriminating songs in the YSL trial. Still, many artists point out that this is merely a means of creativity, which is something Willis encourages criminals to continue.

“I don’t understand the culture of we’re gonna allow people to hurt people that we love and we’re not gonna come forward. I’m telling you, as long as I sit here as the DA, if you brag about doing harm to people in my community and you put it on social media, I thank you for it. I think you have the right to that creative expression. Please keep continuing to use it,” she added, which was met with applause from the crowd.
