Parents and authorities are reeling after an 11-year-old boy committed a shocking act of violence against two 13-year-olds at a Little League football practice in Florida.

Monday night, police in Apopka, about 20 miles from Orlando, received calls about a shooting at the Northwest Recreation Complex. The request for emergency services initially came in at 8:18 p.m., according to NBC News. Apopka Police officers arrived moments later at 8:24 p.m., only to find the two teenagers wounded. One had been hit with a bullet in the arm, while the other was shot in the torso.

Witnesses say one of the older boys slapped food out of the shooter’s hand, which led to a scuffle during practice with the youth sports group Pop Warner. Shortly after, the 11-year-old retrieved a handgun from a lockbox in his mother’s car and fired into a crowd, WESH confirmed. Many bystanders scattered when the gunfire rang out.

“We all thank God nobody was hurt more seriously than what they were. This could have been a very tragic incident,” Apopka Police Chief Mike McKinley said after the incident.

Pop Warner officials are conducting their own investigation into what transpired. They are looking to see how they can better protect their players and attendees. Meanwhile, the 11-year-old is facing charges of attempted second-degree murder. His mother, who has not yet been identified, could likely face charges for leaving the box where the gun was housed unlocked.
