Best Buy is discontinuing DVD and Blu-ray sales at the end of the 2023 holiday season due to the shift to streaming and the need for more space for tech products.
“To state the obvious, the way we watch movies and TV shows is much different today than it was decades ago,” Best Buy said. “Making this change gives us more space and opportunity to bring customers new and innovative tech for them to explore, discover, and enjoy.”
Best Buy doesn’t disclose DVD sales, but it has 24,000 DVDs listed on its website. In recent years, the company has decreased its DVD shelf space.
Best Buy’s withdrawal from the DVD market will leave Walmart, Amazon, and Target as the primary retailers offering DVDs.
Currently, Walmart is the dominant player, with a 45% market share in DVD sales.
Last month, Netflix mailed out its last red-enveloped DVD.
