Fellas, you may want to put the phones down, especially if you’re looking to have kids soon.

A recent study published in the Fertility and Sterility Journal found that excessive cell phone use could decrease sperm concentration and total sperm count. Scientists in Switzerland examined 5,605 men aged 18–22 between 2005 and 2018. The participants were surveyed about various aspects of their health and lifestyle. The biggest questions were regarding their cell phone habits and where they keep their devices when not in use.

The study found that most of the men who used their devices over 20 times a day saw a 21% higher risk for overall sperm count. Additionally, the participants were 30% more likely to have poor sperm concentrations. These findings were determined after 2,866 of the men consented to genital exams, which included semen examination. It was also found that the guys who used their phones more did not fit the WHO criteria for fertile men.

Though concerning, it remains to be determined whether or not radiofrequency electromagnetic emissions from phones alone contribute to male infertility. Despite the fact that 85.7% of the males kept their cell phones in their pants pockets when not in use, there was no discernible correlation between this placement and the low quality of semen. However, as a precaution, the California Department of Public Health has advised that people keep their cell phones stored away from their bodies when not in use to combat any risks affiliated with radiofrequency electromagnetic emissions. This would include a backpack, purse, or briefcase.
