Courtney B. Vance opens up about parenting teenage twins with his wife, Angela Bassett.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the 63-year-old actor discusses his experiences in parenting his 17-year-old children, daughter Bronwyn Golden Vance and son Slater Josiah Vance, alongside his wife, and according to Vance, the job isn’t easy.

“I always tell people that I go to work to rest, and I come home to work,” he said. “I am running around this house, doing this and that…That’s the way we are, we are busy, all of us. The four of us and our company manager and our executive assistant, we’re a machine that really everybody’s got to communicate, ‘Who’s got this person, who’s got that person?’ ”

After a seven-year journey of undergoing IVF treatments, Vance and Bassett welcomed their fraternal twins on January 27, 2006, with the help of a surrogate. In a 2021 appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Bassett gave insights into their approach to disciplining their children, shedding light on their methods.

“He is usually pretty calm but he is consistent,” Bassett said. “For instance, right now he’s 2,500 miles or so away in Chicago, and he can still get them to hop to it.”

Furthermore, Vance anticipates that when the twins head off to college next year, it will be an emotionally challenging adjustment for their entire family. He reflects on the significant transition that occurred when the twins were first welcomed into their lives, and he acknowledges that the upcoming transition as they enter the next phase of their lives will also be substantial.

“We could say that we’ve been getting ready for them to be gone. They were away this whole summer, and we were working,” he said. “We can say all we want to, but when it actually hits you when they’re out of the house — and it’s just us and our beloved Piper, our lab — it’s going to be emotional.”
