Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of killing George Floyd, is expected to survive the prison stabbing attack.
Chauvin, 47, was stabbed earlier this week at an Arizona prison. Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara and a spokesperson for state attorney general Keith Ellison’s office told PEOPLE that Chauvin is on the mend and in stable condition.
A source familiar with the incident previously told the AP on Friday that Chauvin was seriously injured after he was attacked by another inmate in the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona.
The medium-security prison has been low-staffed which has caused a lack of security, PEOPLE reported.
“No employees were injured during the incident,” a statement from the BOP read. “Responding employees initiated life-saving measures for one incarcerated individual. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were requested while life-saving efforts continued.”
“The incarcerated individual was transported by EMS to a local hospital for further treatment and evaluation,” the statement concluded.
