If Jonathan Majors is found guilty in his criminal trial, he could face up to one year in jail.

On Wednesday, Majors appeared at New York Criminal Court for the initial proceedings of his trial. The actor was seen entering the courtroom for a closed hearing prior to the commencement of jury selection. Notably, he was also spotted holding a coffee mug, a notebook, a yellow Post-It pad, and what seemed to be a Bible adorned with gold leaf.

Judge Michael Gaffey spoke to the actor on Wednesday morning, explaining that a conviction in the trial could result in a maximum jail sentence of one year. The judge also emphasized Majors’ right to be present throughout each day of the trial, emphasizing that the proceedings would continue even if he were not physically present in the courtroom.

During an October 25th hearing, Gaffey rejected a request to dismiss the Manhattan District Attorney’s criminal case against Majors. It’s worth noting that Grace Jabbari, the individual whom Majors is accused of assaulting, also faced her own legal issues, as she was arrested on charges of assault and criminal mischief in October. However, at the time of her arrest, according to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the District Attorney said the office” declined to prosecute the case against Grace Jabbari because it lacks prosecutorial merit.”

The trial comes about eight months after the actor faced charges related to an alleged domestic dispute involving Jabbari. On March 25th, Majors was taken into custody and was formally charged the following day. The charges against him include three counts of assault in the third degree, aggravated harassment in the second degree, three counts of attempted assault in the third degree, and harassment in the second degree.
