Billie Eilish has revealed that she was outed by Variety about her LGBTQ+ status.
On Instagram, the pop star shared a series of pictures and videos in a photo dump of her eventful past few days, including Variety’s Hitmakers brunch event.
The caption read: “thanks variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters i like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares.”
Eilish is addressing an interview that she had with Variety’s Tiana DeNicola, where she was directly asked if her recent Variety cover story meant she intended to come out.
During the interview, an awkward moment unfolded as Billie began by expressing her fear of women while admiring their beauty, similar to her Variety quote. Tiana DeNicola, thinking Billie hinted at her sexuality, spontaneously asked if she intended to come out as LGBTQ+.Billie played along, stating it wasn’t necessarily a confirmation, assuming people were already aware. Despite this, the media ran with the idea that she had confirmed coming out.Eilish then expressed her disinterest in formally announcing her sexuality, emphasizing the desire for people to just coexist without the need for explicit declarations.“I’m just like, why can’t we just exist? I’ve been doing this for a long time and I just didn’t talk about it.”
She said, “I saw the article and I was like, ‘Oh, I guess I came out today. OK, cool.”
So far, Neither DeNicola nor Variety has responded to Billie’s concerns. Although she doesn’t seem overly concerned about “coming out,” she feels that being outed is wrong. Like this:
