André 3000 has expressed interest in creating another OutKast album, but its realization is uncertain.
In an extended CBS Mornings interview, the musician addresses whether Big Boi has encouraged a reunion since their last collaboration.
During the interview, 3000 shared that his longtime collaborator has allowed him creative freedom, but he also acknowledged his eagerness to challenge himself by returning to rap.
“No, to be honest,” 3000 said in response. “No, but I think because he knows who I am and knows what gets me going, knows what inspires me, knows when I’m excited about something. So I think, in that sense, he’s never pushed that issue. But I’m sure like, I want another OutKast album. Yeah, like in my mind – but see, that’s the thing. That’s the human side. I want an OutKast album a long time ago.”
He continued, “And honestly, for me as an individual, it would be gratifying to me to put out a solo rap situation. But not for nobody else at this point. It’s for me because I actually like the challenge of, ‘How could I make this part of my life interesting and rhyme in words?’ You know what I mean? Like how can I do that? So yeah, it’s still a challenge. So I think hopefully, with will and intent, something will happen.”
André 3000 released a non-rapping flute album called New Blue Sun earlier this month.
While promoting the album, he claimed he wasn’t rapping because he had nothing to talk about at his age.
“To be a rapper, you gotta be rapping. I haven’t been rapping, like I don’t hang around the studio,” he said, adding, “I don’t sit and try to rap every day like when I was younger, and that’s all I did. I miss those times a lot, but life changes; life moves on.”
3000 said the wind blew him in the direction of making his non-rapping album, so let’s see if it blows him to the booth.
