Killer Mike is getting real about how he spent his first big check.

The Atlanta rapper and advocate recently joined the “Big Facts” podcast alongside hosts Big Bank, DJ Scream, and Baby Jade. During their chat, Mike touched on a variety of topics, one of which was his transition from the streets to the music industry. Even with the co-sign of Outkast and a buzzing name in his city, Mike admits that early in his career, he was not completely done with the marijuana business, even using some of his record deal advance money to fund it.

“With my advance, I think I bought like 14 pounds of some mid,” Mike reminisced.

Mike says when Big Boi found out about the purchase, he was not happy about it. He recalled the rapper confronting him and asking, “Are you gonna be a drug dealer or a rapper?” Mike explained that during that moment, he realized he had to make a change, opting to stick with music instead of the weed game.

Mike made his mainstream debut on Outkast’s fourth album, “Stankonia,” on the track “Snappin’ and Trappin.” He was later featured on the duo’s Grammy-winning single “The Whole World.” Mike’s debut album, “Monster,” was unveiled in 2003 and introduced his hit single, “A.D.I.D.A.S.” While he still focuses on music, Mike has turned his attention to social activism and educating his community on finances and investments, careful not to stray too far from his roots. He also uses his platform to speak out about police brutality and politics as it relates to the Black community.
