The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the arrest of Deandre Patrick Lawrence, 23, of Detroit, alleging that he shot his ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend multiple times.
Lawrence has been was arraigned for assault with intent to murder and felony firearm, CBS News reported. Authorities say that on December 25, Lawrence and his ex’s new boyfriend got into an argument while Lawrence came to the residence to drop off gifts for his three children.
The two allegedly got into a physical altercation. At some point, the 25-year-old victim left the house, but Lawrence followed him. The boyfriend tripped and fell to the ground, and that’s when Lawrence allegedly shot him in the back.
Authorities reported that the victim survived but sustained critical injuries, as stated by WDIV.
Lawrence has previous felony convictions for fleeing and eluding and home invasion, the prosecutor’s office added.
He entered a not-guilty plea, and his bond was set to $1 million.
A judge ordered Lawrence to have no-contact with the victim or witnesses and issued a GPS tether if his bond is posted.
Lawrence is scheduled back in court on Jan. 4.
“Violent actions have no place in resolving disputes,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido. “Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. We will work to ensure accountability for this terrible Christmas Day shooting.”
