Former President Barack Obama gives a glimpse into the tunes that have found a place on his playlists in the current year.
On Friday, Obama unveiled his preferred music of 2023 on his social media profiles, saying, “Here are some of my favorite songs from this year. Let me know if there are any artists or songs I should check out.”
Jon Batiste, a perennial favorite, led the former president’s 2023 song list, accompanied by indie artist Mitski, rapper Megan Thee Stallion, Victoria Monét, Beyoncé and 24 other selections. The diverse lineup spanned the globe, showcasing artists such as Yng Lvcas from Mexico, Burna Boy from Nigeria, and Dave from the U.K., among numerous international talents.
This marks the ninth consecutive year of the playlist tradition, initiated by Obama in 2015 while still in office. In recent years, he has also shared summer updates, offering insights into his evolving musical, literary, and cinematic preferences to the American public.

During the summer, the former president emphasized that his media lists, which frequently showcase a more youthful taste, genuinely represent his personal enjoyment.
“Here’s the bottom line of my playlists and my book lists and my movie lists: I am very scrupulous about making sure that this is stuff that I actually like,” Obama said. “I will confess that there are times on the playlists, on music lists, where I will get suggestions because it’s not like I got time to be listening to music all the time.”
