Newly released Gypsy Rose Blanchard has given her first interview since her prison stint for orchestrating the killing of her mother.
Blanchard spoke with ABC News’ Deborah Roberts for Good Morning America, where she explained that she was addicted to painkillers at the time her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, was murdered.
“This is really hard to talk about because it took me down a really dark path. But I felt like it was my only way to cope for a time,” Blanchard explained of her addiction.
The 32-year-old solicited her ex-boyfriend, Nicholas “Nick” Godejohn, to kill Dee Dee. The woman had abused Blanchard for years by exaggerating many medical conditions, which resulted in Blanchard undergoing unnecessary surgeries and procedures. Blanchard says she was high when she came up with the idea for Godejohn to kill Dee Dee but maintains she only had her mom murdered as a way to stop the abuse.
“I don’t believe my mother is a monster. She had a lot of demons. I didn’t want her dead; I just wanted out of my situation, and I thought that was the only way out,” she shared. Despite serving eight years in prison, Blanchard says she has only been pill-free for about four years.
Gypsy pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 10 years. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder in 2019 and sentenced to life without parole. Now a free woman, Blanchard admits that the fame surrounding her case leaves her feeling “conflicted.” Nevertheless, Blanchard is grateful for the support and is thrilled to start her new life.
