21 Savage, Donald Glover, and Caleb McLaughlin have joined forces to create a new film centered around the life of the Atlanta rapper and his well-known 2018 ICE arrest.
In a recently released trailer that also serves as a music video for Savage’s new track, Glover and McLaughlin take on the roles of Savage at different stages of his life. The video also features Jabari Banks portraying Metro Boomin. The upcoming film, titled “American Dream: The 21 Savage Story,” has not yet announced its official release date. The movie boasts an ensemble cast featuring Natasha Lyonne, comedian Druski, Gail Bean, Chad Lindberg. Furthermore, the trailer was directed by a team that includes Donald and Stephen Glover, Jamal Olori, and Fam Udeorji.
As stated in the trailer release, the storyline begins with a young Savage facing bullying at school before finding solace in rap music and undergoing a transformative journey. The role then transitions to Donald, who enters the studio alongside rapper-producer Metro Boomin. However, the narrative takes a dramatic turn when ICE officials conduct a raid at his home, leading to a courtroom appearance. Ultimately, Savage is set free, goes on to win a Grammy, receives a knighthood from the extravagant Natasha Lyonne, and recounts the origin of his moniker, “21 Savage.”
Savage’s 2018 arrest sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community. This incident occurred during Donald J. Trump’s presidency and brought to light previously undisclosed aspects of the rapper’s life. Notably, he was born in the United Kingdom and later relocated to Atlanta as a child.
Following his release, Savage revealed that he believed he was singled out by ICE, possibly because of his outspoken criticism of the U.S. immigration system. He later obtained permanent U.S. citizenship and even made a return to the United Kingdom to perform.
