Michelle Obama Says She Doesn't Want People To View Her Marriage As "#CoupleGoals"

Barack and Michelle Obama (INstagram)

Michelle Obama has never shied away from both the good and bad moments of her 31-year marriage to Barack Obama, and now, the former First Lady has more to share.

The New York Times bestselling author sat down with the “Jay Shetty Podcast” recently, where she offered up more information about her relationship with the former president. In true Michelle fashion, she pointed out that their marriage is far from perfect, which she begins to talk about after the 30-minute mark.

“I don’t want people looking at me and Barack like hashtag couple goals and not know that no, no, there are some broken things that happen even in the best of marriages,” she revealed.

While she did not go into the juicy details of what those “broken things” were, Mrs. Obama explained that she and Barack have improved the way they handle one another over the years.

“[During] year five, I might have had hurt feelings and it would’ve taken days to rectify it. Year 30? It’s like, ‘Ah, there she goes again, or there he goes again,'” she shared with Shetty.

The couple said “I do” on October 3rd, 1992. They welcomed their first daughter, Malia, in 1998, followed by Sasha in 2001. Barack was elected as the 44th president in January 2009. After being appointed to a second term, the family remained in the White House until January 2017. Michelle has previously discussed how those eight years were challenging for the family, though the pair weathered the storm, appearing to be the perfect couple to the public.

“We’ve made a lot of mistakes, we’ve gotten it wrong, and after 31 years, we’re getting better at it,” she explained, adding later in the conversation, “The good has outweighed it, and if we hadn’t hung in there we would’ve missed all the good.”

We’re glad to see the Obamas stuck it out.
