Actress Sanaa Lathan has signed on to channel her inner Miss Cleo in a forthcoming scripted drama series.
The Emmy-nominated star will not only portray the famous 90s television “psychic,” but she will also executive produce the film alongside Sharon Hall, who will also EP via her Mom de Guerre Productions, Deadline reports.
This movie follows the well-received 2022 documentary, “Call Me Miss Cleo,” which highlighted Cleo’s life and her rise to fame through her beloved catchphrase, “Call Me Now!” Cleo was the face of the Psychic Readers Network between 1997 and 2003. The doc explains how the network went under, with Cleo becoming the scapegoat. In 2002, the owners of the Psychic Readers Network faced charges from the Federal Trade Commission for engaging in deceptive advertising, billing, and collection practices. Although Harris was not indicted, the individuals responsible only had to pay $5 million to victims, though the original total was $500 million. Now, with a film based on Cleo, it seems that more could be revealed about the series of events that took place before her 2016 death.
The series has been described as a “darkly comedic drama” about the infomercial queen, whose real name was Youree Dell Harris. Legendary Entertainment is taking the lead in developing the project. As of now, it’s unknown which platform will become the home of the series. However, HBO Max could be a contender, as they were the streamers who introduced the documentary.
