Instagram's Latest Feature: Nighttime 'Nudging' for Teens Emphasizes the Importance of Sleep

Instagram is attempting to tackle late-night doomscrolling among minors with “nighttime nudges“—a feature promoting downtime over screen time.

The prompt activates when users engage with tools like direct messages and Reels for more than 10 minutes during late-night hours.

“Time for a break” reads a mock-up of the alert. “It’s getting late. Consider closing Instagram for the night.”

According to reports, Meta is rolling out the new feature because “sleep is important, particularly for young people.”

Following recent announcements, the company plans to restrict content for teens on Instagram and Facebook, aiming to reduce exposure to potentially harmful content related to suicide, self-harm, or eating disorders.

For teens searching certain terms, Meta will conceal related search results and guide them to hotlines and resources for assistance.

In a recent blog post, Instagram and Facebook said they will automatically apply maximum restrictions on settings for teenage users.

Additionally, parents can now supervise their child’s social media activity using a new tool on the platforms, gaining insights into online time and the ability to set scheduled breaks.
