Colman Domingo has scored another major role as Joe Jackson in the forthcoming Michael Jackson biopic.
Domingo is set to portray the fierce matriarch and talent manager of the Jackson 5 who thrust his children into the spotlight while raising them in a strict household in the upcoming biopic “Michael,” directed by Antoine Fuqua. Domingo, a Best Actor Oscar nominee this year for his role in “Rustin,” is sure to bring a rich portrayal to Jackson, which could earn him another Oscar nod.
Domingo, recognized for his screen presence and force of will, has garnered accolades with nominations for a Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics Choice, and SAG for his work. His versatility is evident in his roles, from playing the monstrous “Mister” in Blitz Bazawule’s musical adaptation of “The Color Purple” to his executive production of the horror movie “It’s What’s Inside.”
The production crew is already praising Domingo’s casting. Graham King, the producer of “Michael,” expresses excitement about having Domingo join the cast, emphasizing his undeniable talent. Fuqua is also thrilled to have Domingo’s incredible range on the set of such an iconic film. Domingo celebrated his new gig on Instagram, writing, “Next up. I am excited. Jaafar is a revelation.”
“Colman has such incredible range – he puts in the work to deeply inhabit his characters and understand their true essence and motivation. I’m grateful to be working with an actor with his passion and ability to portray the many sides of Joe Jackson: a husband, a father, and a manager,” director Antoine Fuqua shared in a statement to Variety. The movie is set to explore Jackson’s triumphs and struggles from childhood stardom to adulthood scrutiny, all while amassing a career unmatched by any other entertainer. The film has an extra special touch to it, as Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson will tackle the lead role of his uncle.
“Michael” is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 18th, 2025.
