Chicago Man Faces Charges After Robbing A Bank Just Days After He Was Acquitted For A Similar Crime

Mohamed Worku

A Chicago man robs a bank just 72 hours after being acquitted in a similar bank robbery.

Two years ago, Mohamed Worku entered a nearby bank and held up a note against the glass, politely requesting, “Give me the money please, thank you.” He departed with approximately $595. He was apprehended around thirty minutes later, holding the note and having about $100 less than his initial haul.

However, during the court proceedings, Worku’s lawyer contended that despite his involvement in a criminal act, it did not qualify as robbery. The attorney, Mary Judge, asserted that robbery entails the act of forcibly taking something or using “intimidation.” According to Judge, in Worku’s request for money, there were “no implicit or explicit threats of any kind.” The jury concurred with this argument, leading to Worku’s release from custody on Friday.

On Monday afternoon, Worku reportedly entered another bank in Lincoln Park and passed a note to an employee. The note stated: “Please Give me the money. I’ll pay it back soon.”

The latest complaint states that the bank teller handed over more than $2,000 to Worku and permitted him to leave before notifying the police. Investigations revealed surveillance footage of an individual fitting the described appearance, making purchases of clothing and a backpack at a nearby Target store. Following the shopping excursion, Worku reportedly changed into the new attire, abandoned some of his old clothes, and exited the store.

Nevertheless, Worku was arrested approximately half an hour after the reported robbery, carrying roughly $200 less than the amount he had received from the bank. He is currently slated to face charges for both bank robbery and bank theft, offenses that do not necessitate the use of force or intimidation.
