Usher addressed the long-standing rumor of him being Beyoncé‘s nanny when she was a child.
In a recent episode of Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast, Usher said that during their youth, he played more of a short-term guardian role for Beyoncé.
“First of all, how could I be a nanny? I’d be a manny,” he joked. “Daryl Simmons had a group by the name of The Dolls, and they came to Atlanta for the first time. This is before Destiny’s Child became Destiny’s Child. I think I looked over them while they [were] doing something in the house, I had to watch over ’cause I was like the, you know, the authority ’cause I guess I was the older teenager at the time. “[I was] making certain that they didn’t, you know, get in no trouble in the house at the time.”
Additionally, Sharpe inquired whether Usher could sense that Beyoncé had a distinctive “it-factor” even when she was younger.
“I think when I saw them, I knew there was something very special about all of them,” he added. “Because as Destiny’s Child, they all thrive. Even still to this day when you see them all together, they all are an incredible unit. Beyoncé had a talent and also a brilliance and a brightness that was much different.”
Last year, Usher initially disclosed that he acted as a chaperone for Beyoncé when they were both younger in an interview on the UK radio show “Capital Breakfast With Roman Kemp.”
“Fun fact, I knew Beyoncé when she was 12 years old, 11 years old,” he shared. “She used to be in a group by the name of The Dolls. I don’t know if I could consider myself their babysitter, but I had a time where I had to watch The Dolls.”
