Rajon Rondo Files To Have January Gun Charges Dismissed

Rajon Rondo, a former NBA All-Star, is aiming to have his charge of unlawfully carrying a handgun dismissed.

According to court documents acquired by TMZ Sports, Rondo’s legal team submitted a motion to dismiss the charge, contending its unconstitutionality under the Second Amendment, asserting his right to bear arms.

“The statute under which Rondo is charged fails to be consistent with the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation,” the documents state.

In addition to the unlawful carrying of a handgun charge, Rondo is confronting allegations of possessing marijuana and paraphernalia in the incident. Rondo was arrested in Indiana on January 28th. The initial encounter with law enforcement occurred during a routine traffic stop, with officers proceeding to search the vehicle upon detecting the scent of marijuana.

Police discovered a firearm, drug paraphernalia, and suspected marijuana during the incident. Rondo was subsequently taken to Jackson County Jail but managed to secure release upon posting bond. His initial court appearance took place on Tuesday.

Rondo was previously restricted from carrying a firearm due to a 2022 incident where he was accused of brandishing a gun at Ashley Bachelor, his former partner, and mother of his children. Bachelor sought protection for herself and their two children by filing an emergency protection order. The case was resolved in June 2022 after Rondo and Bachelor reached an undisclosed agreement, leading to the dismissal of the case.

Nevertheless, the judge has yet to decide on Rondo’s motion to dismiss the charge, with a hearing set for late March.
