Later this month, the first over-the-counter birth control pill will be on pharmacy and store shelves nationwide.
Opill, the first daily birth control approved for over-the-counter use by the U.S. FDA for all ages in July, is now open for pre-order with certain online retailers.
Perrigo, the pill maker’s manufacturer, says the product will be offered in one-month, three-month, and six-month packs with suggested retail prices of $19.99, $49.99, and $89.99, as stated by Perrigo.
The company will also introduce a cost-assistance program in the coming weeks to assist eligible low-income, uninsured individuals in getting the product at a low or no cost.
According to the consumer products company, their product is 98% effective when taken as directed.
Initially approved by the FDA as a prescription drug in 1973, HRA Pharma, a subsidiary of Perrigo, obtained the rights to Opill from Pfizer in 2014.
