The husband who rose to internet fame in 2015 after a photo of a dress worn at his wedding sparked a global debate on its color has pleaded guilty to attempting to strangle his wife. This comes nearly nine years after the viral sensation that had everyone on social media weighing in on whether the dress was black and blue or white and gold.
Court documents revealed that 38-year-old Keir Johnston‘s attack on his wife Grace occurred on March 6, 2022, on the remote Scottish island where the couple lived following an argument about Grace’s decision to attend a job interview on the mainland.
Prosecutors said as the argument escalated outside their home, Keir, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, physically restrained Grace, pinning her to the ground and beginning to strangle her. Despite her severe distress and fear for her life, Grace managed to scream for help. Miraculously, she did not require medical attention, although she suffered visible bruising from the assault.
The court, recognizing the severity of Keir’s actions and the threat they posed to Grace, denied him bail and opted to keep him in custody until his sentencing on June 6.
The couple’s story is in stark contrast to their previous public image, which gained worldwide attention during the “Great Dress Debate” of 2015. The debate was sparked by a viral photo of a dress posted on Tumblr. The couple’s appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show followed, where they discussed the optical illusion that made the dress appear as different colors to different individuals.
