Three years ago, Donnell Jones, Carl Thomas, and Dave Hollister came together to create the R&B supergroup, The Chi. There wasn’t much talk about the newly formed group after the announcement. But now, the trio has reemerged with a new member, Grammy-nominated singer Syleena Johnson.
On Saturday, the group made their debut performance at the 2024 Black Music Honors. The following day, Johnson confirmed in an Instagram post that she had joined Hollister and Thomas and is now the official third member of the group.
“Welp, the cat is out the bag in a good way,” the singer said in her post. “I am officially a part of an R&B trio that is SURE to shake the table in R&B music!! It’s an honor to be able to share the stage with these two vocal giants!! So THIS is our next Chapter and we couldn’t be more ready. It’s official. My brothers @carlthomasnow and @davehollister and myself are the new R&B super group “THE CHI.”
While the reveal confirms that Johnson did replace Jones, the “Where I Wanna Be” singer doesn’t seem to hold any animosity towards his former bandmates, commenting under Hollister’s post, “This is dope bro!!!!” Nevertheless, Jones’s departure from the group remains unknown at this time.
If you’re interested in tuning into the group’s debut performance, the 2024 Black Music Honors will premiere on Saturday, June 1st, on the Stellar Network at 8 p.m. ET. Additionally, the special will air on Bounce TV on June 19th at 9 p.m. ET.
