Common is clearing up whether or not his Drake beef stemmed from them both dating Serena Williams.Â
The Chicago rapper sat down with “Drink Champs,” addressing how his rap feud with the Toronto star began. According to Common, he’s unsure why Drizzy had an issue with him but believes it may have stemmed from Williams, whom he reportedly dated between 2007 and 2010. Drake was rumored to be seeing the tennis star sometime in 2011.
“I felt like Drake was sending me a couple of shots, subliminals,” Common explained to N.O.R.E and DJ EFN. “I don’t know what motivated him to send me some shots but I think what for sure had me, if I’m just being real, like you know, we mess with one of the same girls.”
Common went on to clarify that while he typically does not feud with men over women, he felt inclined to respond once he continued being poked.
“You know, wars happen over women,” he stated. “That’s just what it is. But I ain’t going to get at you if you with somebody I was with. But if you start throwing me a couple little, you know, you trying to throw some jabs, you know, and I’m like, ‘Come on man, OK.'”
Drake allegedly took shots at Common on the January 2012 track “Stay Schemin,” which he was featured on alongside French Montana and now rival Rick Ross. The bar, “It bothers me when the gods get to actin’ like broads,” was rumored to be about Common, as well as the follow-up line, “I just ask that when you see me, you speak up n***a, that’s all.” His seasoned rival responded that same month with a diss over the hit’s beat.
The men eventually bumped into one another and it was Drake’s father, Dennis Graham, that helped them to squash their issues once and for all.
